Dartford and Gravesham Green Party monthly meeting minutes

The local branch met on the 26th January at the Rum Puncheon. The full minutes are available here (login required).

Officer updates

  • Andy Blatchford (chair) and Mark Lindop (Election Officer) will be attending the national party conference in February in Harrogate. All are welcome to join them
  • The Bexley meeting has been pushed back. We are expecting to be able to offer our sister party help campaigning in the upcoming London Assembly elections.
  • There is a Green-themed play by the Meopham Players running from 25th Feb. More information here.

Thames Crossing

The subject of much of the meeting was the newly-proposed Thames Crossing.

It was noted that there is now an official Highways Agency consultation on their preferred option (ie instead of still potentially considering Dartford, Swanscombe and Gravesend, the only option on the table right now is Gravesend).

Our position remains unchanged:

Our policy (decided at the meeting after debate) is that we rejectboth proposals (Dartford or Gravesham to be the Southern terminus of the new bridge/tunnel), and favour instead ways to decrease the amount of traffic needing to cross the Thames in the first place. Ideas include levying freight coming into Dover to encourage other ports in the UK (Felixstowe, Tilbury) closer to eventual destination to be used, investigating air quality concerns around Dartford, and crucially investing the rail network to encourage more freight to use that medium.

We encourage everyone to fill in the consultation document, and for a “guide” to be published on the website.

Next meeting/social

Next monthly meeting will be Sunday 6th March 2016, 1pm at the Rum Punchoen.

Next social is tentatively Wednesday 24th February at the Rasoighar Indian restaurant in Gravesend.
