A KNITTED poppy appeal is being launched for a Remembrance Day commemoration in Gravesend.
Gravesham Borough Council is working with the Royal British Legion and Gravesham Urban Knitters to create a carpet of knitted or crocheted poppies. More than 7,000 will be needed in total to cover an area in Windmill Hill Memorial Garden.
The council is calling on people of Gravesend to get their wool and needles out and get knitting for this worthy community project. The council’s Director of Communities, Melanie Norris, said:
“This is such a lovely idea and one which we hope people will get involved in. Even if you can only make one poppy it will help towards our target of 7,000. I would urge as many of you as possible to get your creative juices flowing to help in this really worthwhile project.”
The poppies can be any size and you can follow any pattern.
So far we have 200 poppies but we need more. They will need to be handed in by Friday 28 October at any of the following locations:
- Civic Centre Reception at Windmill Street
- Gravesend Visitor Information Centre (Towncentric)
- The Gr@nd Healthy Living Centre
- Your local library
- Or you can contact Kirsty Gaunt on 01474 337591 to arrange collection.
If you’re unable to help with the project, but have any spare red or black wool please also get in touch so that it can be passed on to other active knitters.
